Versailles, Rococo, and the Grand Tour
The Palace of Versailles, transformed from a hunting lodge into the seat of French royal power under Louis XIV, embodies Baroque architecture placed in the service of absolutist monarchy. Architects Louis Le Vau and later Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the painter Charles Le Brun, and the landscape designer André Le Nôtre collaborated on a vast ensemble whose Hall of Mirrors, formal gardens, and rigid symmetry projected an image of total royal control over nature, space, and courtly life. The palace became a template imitated by monarchs across Europe eager to express their own authority through architecture.
