Decoloniality: Quijano and the Coloniality of Power

Aníbal Quijano (1928–2018) was a Peruvian sociologist trained at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima and, later, at Cornell University, who worked for decades within and against the Latin American dependency-theory tradition associated with economists such as Raúl Prebisch and André Gunder Frank. In his 1992 Spanish-language essay "Colonialidad y modernidad/racionalidad," published in the journal Perú Indígena, Quijano introduced the concept for which he is now best known internationally: "coloniality of power" (colonialidad del poder), later elaborated in the widely cited English article "Coloniality of Power, Eurocentrism, and Latin America," published in the journal Nepantla: Views from South in 2000.
