Latin American Philosophy of Interculturality Today
From the 1990s onward, a current usually called filosofía intercultural (intercultural philosophy) developed as both a continuation and a self-critical revision of the earlier philosophy of liberation, associated above all with the Cuban-German philosopher Raúl Fornet-Betancourt (b. 1946), who has organized a long-running series of international congresses on intercultural philosophy since 1992 and directs relevant programs at the Missionswissenschaftliches Institut Missio in Aachen, Germany. Fornet-Betancourt's central methodological claim is that philosophy itself, including the earlier liberationist critique of Eurocentrism, must be rethought as an inherently plural, dialogical activity conducted from and between multiple, genuinely distinct cultural and epistemic traditions, rather than as a single universal discourse — even an anti-colonial one — articulated from one privileged vantage point, whether European or Latin American mestizo.
