Modern Japanese Philosophy's Influence on Contemporary Thought
Ueda Shizuteru (1926-2019), Nishitani's student and eventual successor to the Kyoto chair, represents the most direct continuation of the school into the late twentieth century, elaborating Nishida's basho logic through detailed comparative studies of the German mystic Meister Eckhart, published as Die Gottesgeburt in der Seele und der Durchbruch zur Gottheit (1965, based on his doctoral research at Marburg), and through influential readings of the Zen ox-herding pictures as a schema for stages of self-realization, work widely cited in subsequent comparative mysticism scholarship.
