Global Tourism Flows and Top Destinations

The UN Tourism (formerly the World Tourism Organization, UNWTO, renamed in 2023) tracks international tourist arrivals worldwide, and its data reveal a striking concentration: international travel grew from roughly 25 million arrivals in 1950 to about 1.46 billion in 2019, the last full year before the COVID-19 pandemic collapsed the sector, according to the organization's annual World Tourism Barometer. France has for decades ranked as the single most-visited country by international arrivals, receiving close to 90 million visitors a year before the pandemic, drawn above all by Paris, the Loire Valley chateaux, and the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts; Spain, the United States, China, and Italy round out the traditional top five, though rankings shift somewhat depending on whether a count includes same-day excursionists or only overnight visitors. The pandemic produced the sharpest contraction in the industry's history, with international arrivals falling by roughly 73 percent in 2020 according to UN Tourism figures, before a gradual recovery that UN Tourism reported had returned arrivals to close to 2019 levels by 2024.
