Sustainable Development Goals and Global Progress

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals and 169 associated targets adopted unanimously by all 193 United Nations member states on 25 September 2015, formally as part of the document "Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," with a target completion horizon of 2030. The SDGs succeeded the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a narrower set of eight goals adopted in 2000 with a 2015 deadline that focused predominantly on poverty, primary education, and health in developing countries; the SDGs deliberately broadened this scope to be explicitly "universal," applying to wealthy and poor countries alike, and to integrate economic, social, and environmental dimensions of development simultaneously — reflected in goals ranging from SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
