The Balfour Declaration and the British Mandate for Palestine

The United Kingdom issued the Balfour Declaration on November 2, 1917, expressing support for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, while including a clause safeguarding the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities. Following the Ottoman defeat, the League of Nations granted Britain the Mandate for Palestine in 1922, formally incorporating the terms of the Balfour Declaration into its administrative obligations. Britain administered Palestine under this mandate from 1922 until its withdrawal in 1948.
