Human Cost and the Enduring Legacy of Korea and Vietnam

The Korean War is estimated to have caused between two and three million combined civilian and military deaths, including roughly 36,000 American combat deaths and several hundred thousand Chinese casualties, alongside extreme material destruction from UN strategic bombing and the extensive use of napalm; millions were displaced, and countless families were permanently separated once the border closed. The Vietnam War produced a comparable toll: an estimated two to three million Vietnamese deaths and approximately 58,000 American military deaths, with Agent Orange exposure causing severe, lasting health consequences, including cancers and birth defects, among both American veterans and the Vietnamese population. After 1975, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fled as refugees known as "boat people," resettling chiefly in the United States, Australia, France, and Canada, while millions of landmines and unexploded munitions left across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia have continued causing civilian casualties for decades.
