Ideological Rivalry and the Satellization of Eastern Europe
At the heart of the emerging conflict lay two mutually exclusive, universalizing ideologies. American liberal capitalism championed private property, free markets, and representative democracy, while Soviet communism promoted state ownership, centralized planning, and one-party rule; Marxism-Leninism held that a worldwide proletarian revolution was a historical inevitability, while American liberalism drew on a reinterpreted doctrine of national "exceptionalism." Each bloc's propaganda cast the other as an existential threat, economically the Soviet model prioritized heavy industry over consumer goods while the American model promoted mass consumption as a symbol of capitalist success, and the rivalry was waged on cultural terrain as well, from the Voice of America to Radio Moscow, extending into competition for influence among the newly decolonizing states of the Third World.
