Napoleon's Rise: From Corsican Artillery Officer to Emperor
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on 15 August 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica, only a year after France had annexed the island. Trained at the military academy of Brienne and then at the École Militaire in Paris, he specialized in artillery, a technical grounding that would shape his entire approach to warfare. His rise began in earnest at the siege of Toulon in December 1793, where his handling of the artillery against royalist and British forces earned him promotion to brigadier general at the age of twenty-four. Two years later, on 13 Vendémiaire (5 October 1795), he crushed a royalist insurrection in Paris by turning cannon on the crowds of demonstrators, an episode remembered as the 'whiff of grapeshot.'
