Modern Systems and Application Languages
Go, often called Golang, was designed at Google starting in 2007 by Robert Griesemer, Rob Pike, and Ken Thompson, the latter also a co-creator of Unix and C decades earlier, and released publicly in 2009. Go was created to address frustrations with slow compilation and complex dependency management in large C++ codebases at Google, favoring a deliberately small, simple language with fast compilation, garbage collection, and built-in support for concurrency through lightweight "goroutines" and channels. Go has become especially popular for backend infrastructure, cloud tooling, and networked services, including projects such as Docker and Kubernetes.
