GMOs, Fraud, and Traceability

Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, in food production involve the direct insertion of specific genetic traits into a crop, most commonly herbicide tolerance, as in "Roundup Ready" soybeans engineered to survive application of the herbicide glyphosate, or pest resistance, as in "Bt corn" engineered to produce insecticidal proteins derived from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. Since their commercial introduction in the mid-1990s, genetically modified varieties have come to dominate US production of corn, soybeans, and cotton, and are grown at significant scale in several other major agricultural exporting countries.
