Hegel's Logic: Being, Essence, and the Concept
Hegel presented his logic in two distinct versions. The 'Greater Logic,' the Wissenschaft der Logik (Science of Logic), appeared in three volumes — the Doctrine of Being (1812), the Doctrine of Essence (1813), and the Doctrine of the Concept, or 'Subjective Logic' (1816) — with a substantially revised edition of the Being volume appearing in 1832, shortly before Hegel's death. A more compressed version, generally called the 'Lesser' or 'Encyclopedia Logic,' forms the first part of his Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften im Grundrisse, first published in 1817 and revised in 1827 and 1830 for use as a lecture textbook, first at Heidelberg and then at the University of Berlin, where Hegel held the chair of philosophy from 1818 until his death.
