Hegel's Philosophy of Right: Family, Civil Society, and the State

Hegel published his Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts (Elements of the Philosophy of Right) in Berlin in 1820, though the title page carries the date 1821; the book grew out of lectures he delivered from 1818 onward, following his appointment to the chair of philosophy at the University of Berlin previously held by Fichte. The work is organized into three principal parts, each corresponding to a more concrete and adequate realization of freedom: Abstract Right (das abstrakte Recht), Morality (Moralität), and Ethical Life (Sittlichkeit).
