Data Visualization Design for Spatial Stories

In their influential 2010 paper "Narrative Visualization: Telling Stories with Data" (IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics), Edward Segel and Jeffrey Heer analyzed a large corpus of published visualizations to propose a formal taxonomy of narrative visualization genres, including annotated charts, partitioned posters, flow charts, comic-strip-style sequences, slide shows, and interactive "drill-down story" formats that let a reader move between a guided narrative and free exploration of the underlying data. This taxonomy has since become a standard reference point for designers building the kind of scroll-driven, map-centered narratives now common in professional geovisualization.
