Climate Diversity Across North America
North America's enormous latitudinal span, from the Arctic islands of Canada to the tropical lowlands near the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico, means the continent contains nearly every major climate type recognized in the Köppen-Geiger classification system. Polar and tundra climates (classified ET) dominate the far north, including much of Nunavut and northern Alaska, while true tropical rainforest and tropical wet-and-dry climates (Af and Aw) appear only at the continent's southern margin, in Chiapas and parts of the Yucatán.
