Population Density and Megacities of South Asia
South Asia is the most populous world region on the planet: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka together are home to close to two billion people. In April 2023 the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) reported, based on its World Population Prospects data, that India had surpassed China to become the world's most populous country, with an estimated population of roughly 1.428 billion against China's roughly 1.425 billion, a milestone reached even as India's total fertility rate had by then fallen to close to the replacement level of around 2.0 births per woman, according to the country's National Family Health Survey.
