Monsoon Agriculture and Rice Cultivation

Wetland paddy rice cultivation is the dominant agricultural system across South and Southeast Asia, and its dependence on standing water through much of the growing season ties it tightly to the timing and volume of monsoon rainfall and to the irrigation infrastructure built to supplement it. Rice supplies the majority of caloric intake for large populations across Bangladesh, eastern and southern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, making the crop's productivity a matter of direct food security rather than simply agricultural output.
