The Chernobyl disaster (1986) and its political fallout

On April 26, 1986, an explosion and subsequent fire occurred in Reactor No. 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Soviet Ukraine. The accident released a massive quantity of radioactive material into the atmosphere, contaminating extensive areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and parts of Europe. Soviet authorities significantly delayed public communication about the true magnitude of the disaster, and the evacuation of the nearby city of Pripyat was carried out only after considerable delay. Tens of thousands of people were permanently evacuated from the area surrounding the plant in the following weeks, and an extensive exclusion zone was established that remains restricted to this day.
