Key point 6 of 8 · The End of the Cold War
The fall of the Berlin Wall and the revolutions of 1989
East Germany experienced a massive exodus of citizens toward the West during the summer and autumn of 1989, traveling via Hungary and Czechoslovakia, alongside growing mass protests within East Germany itself, particularly in Leipzig, through the so-called "Monday demonstrations." Communist leader Erich Honecker was forced to resign in October 1989 amid mounting pressure, and Egon Krenz briefly assumed leadership, seeking limited reforms to contain the crisis. The East German government prepared new travel regulations aimed at partially relieving accumulated popular pressure.
