The Persian Wars
The Persian Wars pitted the Greek poleis against the Achaemenid Persian Empire in the early fifth century BCE. The conflict had its immediate origin in the revolt of the Greek cities of Ionia, on the coast of Asia Minor, against Persian rule (499-494 BCE), a revolt that received military support from Athens and Eretria, prompting reprisals from the Persian king Darius I.
