Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic period

Philip II of Macedon extended his hegemony over the Greek poleis, defeating the coalition led by Athens and Thebes at the Battle of Chaeronea (338 BCE) and organizing the Greek states under his leadership into the League of Corinth. After his assassination in 336 BCE, he was succeeded by his son Alexander III, tutored in his youth by Aristotle.
