The Fertile Crescent and the Sumerian City-States
The term "Fertile Crescent" refers to the band of land irrigated by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in present-day Iraq, together with parts of the Mediterranean Levant. The availability of water and fertile alluvial soils allowed, from the sixth millennium BCE onward, the development of irrigation agriculture and, with it, the growth of increasingly complex permanent settlements.
