Mesopotamian Religion and Mythology

Mesopotamian religion was polytheistic and shared, with local variations depending on the period and city, a broad pantheon of deities associated with natural forces and cosmic functions. Among the principal gods were An (or Anu), god of the sky; Enlil, lord of the air and of authority; Enki (or Ea), god of fresh waters and wisdom; and Inanna (known as Ishtar in Akkadian), goddess of love, fertility, and war. Each city also had its own patron deity with a dedicated cult at its main temple.
