The legendary founding of Rome and the Monarchy
Roman tradition, transmitted chiefly by authors such as Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus, places the founding of Rome in 753 BCE, the work of Romulus, who after killing his twin brother Remus became the city's first king. According to this legendary account, the two were sons of the god Mars and Rhea Silvia, and were raised by a she-wolf after being abandoned on the banks of the Tiber.
