The UN's Specialized Agencies

Alongside its six principal organs, the UN system includes some fifteen specialized agencies: legally autonomous organizations linked to the UN through agreements concluded under Articles 57 and 63 of the Charter and coordinated through ECOSOC. Among the best known are the World Health Organization, founded in 1948 and headquartered in Geneva; the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, established in 1945–1946 in Paris and responsible, among other things, for the World Heritage Convention of 1972; and the UN Children's Fund, created in 1946 to provide emergency relief to children in post-war Europe and made a permanent part of the UN system in 1953, an organization awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965.
