Peacebuilding, Sanctions, and Disarmament

UN peacebuilding addresses the causes and consequences of conflict once active fighting has ended, aiming to prevent a relapse. The 2005 World Summit created the Peacebuilding Commission, an intergovernmental advisory body, along with the Peacebuilding Fund and the Peacebuilding Support Office, to help mobilize resources and coordinate strategy in countries emerging from conflict. Typical activities include the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former combatants, and support for the rule of law and transitional justice; the UN has run major peacebuilding operations in countries including Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Timor-Leste.
