Penetration Testing Methodology
Professional penetration testing follows a structured methodology rather than ad-hoc probing, both to ensure thorough coverage and to produce results a client can act on. Although specific frameworks vary in naming, most describe a similar sequence of phases: pre-engagement and scoping, reconnaissance, scanning and enumeration, exploitation, post-exploitation, and reporting. Recognized standards such as PTES and the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Testing Guide formalize this sequence so that testers working for different firms produce comparably rigorous, comparably documented results, and so that clients know what to expect from an engagement they are paying for.
