Forensic Analysis and Evidence
Anti-forensics refers to techniques attackers or malicious insiders use to prevent, complicate, or mislead a forensic investigation, and understanding them conceptually is essential for investigators to recognize when they are being used. Common categories include data wiping or secure deletion tools that overwrite storage in ways designed to defeat recovery, timestamp manipulation ("timestomping") that alters a file's recorded creation or modification times to disguise when an action actually occurred, and encryption used specifically to place evidence beyond an investigator's reach without the correct key. Some anti-forensic techniques target the investigation process itself, such as deliberately planting misleading artifacts to implicate an innocent party or exhaust investigator time, which is why experienced examiners treat unusually clean or unusually convenient evidence with particular scrutiny.
