Cave Art and the First Symbolic Expressions

During the Upper Paleolithic, coinciding with the spread of Homo sapiens across Europe, the earliest known artistic expressions developed: cave paintings and engravings, as well as small sculptures and personal ornaments. These productions are generally interpreted as evidence of fully developed symbolic thought, although their exact function — ritual, magical, mnemonic, or social — remains a matter of discussion among specialists.
