The Metal Ages: Copper, Bronze, and Iron
The Metal Ages follow the Neolithic and are traditionally subdivided into three periods, defined according to the predominant metal used in making tools and weapons. The first, the Chalcolithic or Copper Age, is characterized by the working of this metal through hammering and, later, smelting techniques, and is documented in various regions of the Near East and Europe from approximately the fifth millennium BCE onward.
